The 2 Friends' visits in 2008 will be:
Summer Guided Tour -- Eden Valley Museum Trust.
This visit will take place on Saterday, 7th June 2008.
This will be a tour of the Eden Valley Museum Trust, 72 High Street, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 5AR. The first part of this special visit will be the recently opened Eden Valley Museum (see KAR number 170, pages 210-211) housed in a late 14th century farm house. This will be followed by a guided tour of the historic town of Edenbridge which contains many fine interesting buildings. Light refreshments will be provided by the Trust at the Museum at the end of the visit. Meet at the Eden Valley Museum (at the lower end of the High Street) at 2.15 pm.
Autumn Guided Tour -- Shoreham.
This visit will take place on Sunday, 28th September.
This will be a tour of the Shoreham Aircraft Museum, 13 High Street, Shoreham Village, Sevenoaks, Kent TN14 7TB. This small museum is set in the attractive Darent Valley and of great interest to all those concerned with the history and archaeology of World War 2. Inspired by Geoff Nutkins with a band of volunteers, this is worth a visit. This will be a special tour for FCKA members of the museum with its WW2 artefacts and stories of Battle of Britain aircraft. Meet at the Museum at 2.15pm.
All paid-up Friends are most welcome to join in -- just turn up on the day.
The Friends of the CKA are visiting the Shoreham Battle of Britain Museum later in the year. Those interested in aviation history might like to visit other museums in East Kent. These are the RAF Manston Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum and the RAF Manston History Museum at Manston airfield.
Both are free to enter, and there is a cafe at the Spitfire building.
An added attraction this year is a small flying display on Sunday 25th May between 12.30 and 3.30 p.m. which will include a Spitfire restored in Kent.
Surrey Industrial History Group are running a series of 11 fortnightly meetings on a Tuesday evening from 7.30 to 9.30 pm starting 30th September 2008. The meetings are held in Lecture Threate F of the University of Surrey at Guildford where free parking is available in the main car park.
The fee for the course is £40, £35 if paid before 30 June.
The programme and further details can be obtained from Bob Bryson on 01483 302389.

Practical work at the Leigh gunpowder mills
Leigh gunpowder mills were started at the beginning of the 19th century and finally closed in the 1920's, though gunpowder production had long ceased by then. Some of the site has been redeveloped for industry and housing but a large section remains as foundations of buildings and the sites of water driven mill-wheels and gears.
There is also a complex system of waterways.
The project will uncover specific sites, locate and assess as much of the others as possible, and produce a written and visual record.
The work is mainly clearance of scrub vegetation to provide access, then uncovering and cleaning the relevant brickwork. Secateurs, rakes, trowels and a stiff brush are the main tools required.
