Chance find at West Wickham.
Having just received a copy of Number 23 of the Kent Archaeological Review, I can offer an identification of the chance find at West Wickham reported on page 91. It is a Reader's badge (LECTORI) of the diocese of Rochester (DIAECES: ROFFEN). IHS means Jesus and the words on the arms of the cross are the way (VIA) the truth (VERITAS) and the life (VITA). The badge, now no longer worn, was until recently, in use, for some 70 or 80 years. A previous occupant of the house must clearly have been a Reader.
